Until now, only human’s rights activists have known about Craigslist’s, and others’, ability to offer women and men for sale online. We believe it is time for the general public to become aware of what is happening and to support the immediate intervention and rescue of victims being offered on the internet.
Some government and law enforcement officials and advocacy groups are petitioning the leadership of Craigslist to take action and curtail the activities of online trafficking. This is a very worthy effort. But, Ahava Kid will not wait. These victims are in danger now and they need immediate intervention to save them.
Local, State and Federal law enforcement officials are unanimous in their frustration with the proliferation of online commercial sexual services and the exploitation young women and men online.
While traditional intervention efforts focused on victims who are ‘walking the streets’ continue, we now know that the vast majority of victims are not there. Most victims in the United States are now being exploited in Cyberspace, a fact that has been dangerously overlooked. So, that is where we must conduct our Intervention. That’s why Cybervention is the answer.
Cybervention is an effective online intervention program offering services to trafficking victims. The goal is to remove them from the horrible life which has been forced upon them. Trained volunteers go to websites like Craigslist seeking those who are offering their bodies for sale in specific geographic areas. Using anonymous cell phones and email addresses, they work from a carefully formatted script which explains that help is available immediately or at any moment in the future. These trained volunteers are able to perform this important work anonymously from the safety of their home.
The goal of Cybervention is to bring people out of human trafficking and prostitution who are listed online. In order to accomplish this goal, we focus on the following objectives.
Through emails, texts and phone calls, our volunteers inform those listed online that there is a way out; an option other than the abuse they live with every day. Cybervention lets them know that:
Immediate help is available.
They can escape “The Life.”
They have access to medical and drug treatment, food, clothing, and legal aid.
We are not the police or law enforcement.
There is a Toll Free 24-hour hotline they can call for any of these services: 877-416-0050
They can and should share this information with other women.
